How GLP-1 medicines work

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after you eat. This type of medicine copies that signal and makes it last longer.

  1. Feel full soonerIt acts on the part of the brain that controls hunger, so smaller portions can feel easier.
  2. Stay full longerFood leaves your stomach more slowly. This is also why stomach upset is the most common side effect.
  3. Steadier blood sugarIt helps your body release insulin after a meal, which helps keep blood sugar steadier after you eat.

The dose starts low and steps up

Starting low and stepping up about every four weeks gives your body time to adjust. Your clinician decides each step.

Some newer medicines act on a second gut hormone as well. In studies of brand-name medicines, they led to a larger average weight loss.

  • Diarrheaabout 2 to 3 in 10 people

  • Constipationabout 1 to 2 in 10 people

  • Vomitingabout 1 to 2 in 10 people

Compounded medicine

The medicine in this program is made by a compounding pharmacy. It is not the same as a brand-name or generic medicine.

Serious problems

Serious problems are rare but can happen. They include swelling of the pancreas, gallbladder problems, kidney problems from fluid loss, severe stomach problems, serious allergic reactions, vision changes in people with diabetes, low blood sugar when taken with some diabetes medicines, and mood changes or thoughts of self-harm. Call us right away, or call 911 in an emergency, if you have severe stomach pain, vomiting that will not stop, or trouble breathing.

Who should not use it

Brand-name medicines of this type carry an FDA boxed warning about thyroid tumors seen in animal studies. Do not use them if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. Do not use them if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Some can make birth control pills work less well.

Not everyone qualifies

Whether medication is appropriate for you, and which one, is decided by your clinician after reviewing your health history. Not everyone who requests the program will be prescribed medication.

Common questions

Who runs the program?

A licensed clinician (MD or NP) at Frontline Healthcare Endocrinology evaluates you, decides on treatment, and monitors you every month.

Who is the program for?

Adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight and have a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure. It is not for cosmetic weight loss. Your clinician decides if it is right for you.

Do I choose my plan?

You can tell us which plan interests you. Your clinician makes the final recommendation based on your health history and goals.

Is it covered by insurance?

This is a self-pay program. We do not bill insurance for it. It is not offered to people covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal, TRICARE, or other government health programs.

Is the result guaranteed?

No. Your result depends on your body, your dose, and the changes you make to eating and activity. Some people lose little or no weight.

Can I cancel?

Yes, at any time, with no cancellation fee. Call us or send us a message at least 3 business days before your next monthly charge. A month is not refunded once the pharmacy has filled your medicine.

What happens if I stop?

Many people regain some weight after stopping medication. Your clinician will talk with you about a long-term plan before you start.
